Willkommen!

In this class we prepare for the General Questions in a German oral exam setting. This class will benefit all students, but is particularly useful for those sitting an examination, such as the Irish Leaving Cert, or English GCSE's or A-Levels, or for anyone who wants an intermediate level of spoken German for leisure, school or business.

We begin with some general tips that help you get in the right frame of mind, then look at each topic individually, including family, home, school, hobbys and future plans. Two lessons take a particular focus on the German Past Tense - critical in answering questions on whether you have travelled abroad - and the Future Tense - useful for articulating your plans for the future.

We prepare excellent answers for the main sections which come up in general conversation, and learn some idioms and phrases along the way!

Who am I?

I'm a teacher of German and History in Ireland and have also worked for years as an examiner at both Junior School and Senior School level. I have created revision sheets for learning German which are available on my website and also post videos on my YouTube channel. Having learned many skills on Skillshare myself, I thought that this would be a very convenient place to post my own classes in German. I hope you find them helpful!

Project Instructions

Assignment

Your class project is to prepare your own individual answers on each of the 8 topics covered in this class: family, home, school, German, hobbies, part-time job, travel, and future plans. This will be invaluable to you in helping you prepare for an exam or real-life situation.

Materials:

Use whatever textbook and dictionary you have available - or you can use PowerPoint or iPad.

I recommend:

  • An A5 schoolbook copy
  • Handwriting your notes with blue or black ballpoint pen
  • Highlighting key words and idioms
  • Using my free Oral Handbook as a starting point (see attached file)

Remember: this class is designed to help you master spoken German. However, before you do this, you will have to write out at least a paragraph on each of the 8 topics we cover.

Getting Started:

Review 'Lesson 2: Family' and choose several sentences that apply to you. Change the details of parents and siblings as appropriate. Below are the first pages I use in class. You should also download the booklet I use (Oral Handbook - see link above) to print out.

Getting Feedback on Your Work:

Share your final project with the class by uploading to the "Your Project" section. If you have any questions or need more tips, please let me know! I'm happy to help!
